• The athlete from Sant Joan de Vilatorrada, who was already the fastest in Catalonia in the marathon, achieves a new record in the 21km.

Meritxell Soler has written a new page in Catalan athletics this Sunday at the Valencia Half Marathon. The runner from Sant Joan de Vilatorrada completed the 21 km in 1:09:46, setting a new record for Catalonia and improving by 15 seconds the previous mark of Marta Galimany (1:10:01). In addition, she surpassed by 35 seconds her personal best achieved in Santa Pola at the beginning of 2024.

With this record, Soler occupies the eighth position in the Spanish historical ranking, led by Kaoutar Boulaid with 1:08:47. In the race, she was the second Spanish woman to cross the finish line, only surpassed by Madrid’s Carla Gallardo (1:09:14), who finished tenth overall.

The victory in the women’s race went to Kenyan Agnes Jebet Ngetich, with a time of 1:03:08, thus achieving the best mark of the year and the third best in history. Ethiopian Fotyen Tesfay was second (1:05:11) and Kenyan Veronica Loleo completed the podium (1:05:46), forming an entirely African podium.

With this success, Meritxell Soler consolidates her status as Catalan record holder in both the half marathon and the marathon: at the 2024 Seville Marathon, she had set a time of 2:24:57, the third best Spanish mark of all time.
